Just scribbles from my thoughts about religion, cuz recently I had some deep thoughts about it.
Two options are in front of you.
One, to help an ugly poor old man who somehow has giant wings attached and looks like an angel; Two, to clean a handsome dead body;
Wouldn’t you take care of the angel, at least more than the dead body? Even if you don’t believe in such things as angels, the old man with wings is ALIVE and the body is cold DEAD! Wouldn’t you reach out for the living?
Well, Gabriel García Márquez answers differently through his magical short stories, “The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World” and “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings”: a dead body is praised like an angel, while the angel is treated as a dead animal.
We judge people, ideas, and even religion, by its outer appearances. Even though some abhor the notion of lookism and stereotyping, there is no doubt that looks are important to giving people their first impression, at least. If we really had the ability to look into a person beyond what’s covering them, why would we be compelled to put on formal dresses and decorate ourselves on job interviews and social meetings? The virtue and attraction of good appearances are indeed undeniable, and the authorities, especially the religious ones, happen to realize that too.
Christianity, for centuries, has used art as a tool to decorate itself. Thousands of sculptures, paintings, and buildings were made from before the Renaissance and even till today. Jesus never said to paint the glasses of the churches, or to build sculptures; nevertheless, popes decorated the face of Jesus himself.
Fabulous interiors and extensive visual-audio systems of mega-churches now replace the role of paintings and fancy furniture. While it succeeded in attracting many, it also succeeded in misleading them. People no longer reach for God but reach for the words that come from a man in a suit; people no longer praise with their hearts but praise by singing along the karaokes.
Many are attracted to the dead; true living are ignored. I’m standing still while looking at that annoyance in my life fly away.
